YMCA of Lancaster & Fairfield County Expanding Access to
Preschool Through Financial Aid Pathways

LANCASTER, Ohio (July 7, 2026) — The YMCA of Lancaster & Fairfield County is making a proactive effort to invest in early childhood education through expanded financial access to their preschool program. The GOLD-rated and state-certified curriculum offers a flexible childcare and learning-supported environment for youth ages three to five. Recognized for its cost-effective approach, the YMCA is actively pursuing additional financial assistance pathways, including households belonging to ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed).

The preschool program, which has served local families for decades, is collaborating with area social services, including United Way of Fairfield County, 2-1-1, and the Fairfield County Workforce Center to identify and champion ALICE-specific financial models for local employers facing labor shortages and challenges due to insufficient childcare options.

Growing concerns related to this workforce challenge presents an economic risk both to the affected families and their employers. Common risks include workforce exit, burnout, financial burdens, and mental health conditions.

The YMCA’s preschool enrollment will expand with the hiring of a full-time educator for the 2026-27 school year, offering increased classroom capacity. This additional staffing equates to approximately 20-25 more children able to join the program, with a combined outreach to ALICE families who were previously affected by limited enrollment opportunities.

This program directly supports our mission to strengthen the community and nurture youth development,” said Jason Boothe, CEO of the YMCA of Lancaster & Fairfield County. “By expanding preschool access and reducing financial barriers, we help children thrive academically and socially while supporting working families who face economic challenges, especially those who are classified as ALICE families.”

Scholarships and financial assistance reduce economic stress faced by mid– to low-income families across the county. This investment offers financial means for parents and guardians to secure reliable and stable childcare without compromising their careers.
