Berne Union Athletic Hall of Fame Welcomes New Inductees and Honors Distinguished Contributors

Sugar Grove, Ohio – The Berne Union Athletic Hall of Fame celebrated excellence, dedication, and legacy during its annual induction ceremony on Saturday, January 3, 2026, held in the Berne Union Auditorium. The event recognized three new Hall of Fame inductees, one Award of Merit recipient, and a distinguished team addition to the Hall of Fame.

This year, the Hall of Fame welcomed Alicia (Rowley) Wentz, Class of 2000; Vic Warthman, Class of 1996; and Michael Seifert, Class of 2000. Wentz excelled in softball, basketball, and volleyball, earning multiple All-League and All-State honors. She set career softball records that still rank among the program’s top performers. Warthman was a standout in football and track, contributing to the first football playoff win in school history. He also holds lasting track records and has remained active in coaching and youth sports. Seifert was a multi-sport athlete in baseball, basketball, cross country, and football, receiving league, district, and state honors. He later played professional baseball in the Toronto Blue Jays organization and now coaches high school baseball.

The Award of Merit was presented to the late Mike Spires for his generosity and dedication to Berne Union athletics. His contributions included coaching youth sports, maintaining athletic facilities, fundraising for equipment, and supporting school programs. His wife, Sharon Spires, accepted the award on his behalf.

The Hall of Fame also recognized the 2014 Boys Varsity Track Team for a historic season. The team won the Mid-State League Championship, finished as District Runner-Up, and achieved the highest-ever Regional finish in school history. Multiple athletes qualified for State competition, including All-Ohio finishes in the 4x200-meter relay and 400-meter dash.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate the achievements of these Berne Union alumni,” said Jon Parker, Superintendent. “Their hard work, dedication, and team spirit made more than just records, they made our school and community proud. They are an inspiration to our students and community.”
The Berne Union Athletic Hall of Fame honors individuals and teams whose achievements and commitment have left a lasting legacy on the school and community.
