Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator

The City of Lancaster is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator. 

This position is responsible for the efficient operation of the water reclamation facility by performing daily operational duties. This position requires technical work tending to and operating the Upper Hocking Water Pollution Control Facility.

NOTE:    Classifications and corresponding pay are determined by individual’s successful completion of examination required by the Ohio EPA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)

Operates pumps, blowers, grit collectors, skimmers, flow monitoring equipment, control panels, boilers, transfer pumps, sludge collectors, treatment chemicals, computer system, electrical motors, and all equipment used at the water reclamation facility;

Performs a variety of laboratory tests to determine operating conditions of the facility;

Regulates and uses sound judgment in the daily operation of the treatment facility;

Keeps work areas clean by performing good housekeeping duties including mopping, sweeping, dusting, cleaning windows, painting, etc.;

Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets operational solutions to adjust equipment and chemical feed rates;

Maintains records and logs of operations and records readings as required;

Takes samples of wastewater at periodic intervals;

The hours required for this position are 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. Call-in and overtime hours may also be required.

Assist maintenance personnel in performing mechanical repairs to facility equipment and as necessary;

Monitors the computer system of the facility and lift stations and makes adjustments of the equipment utilizing these systems;

Reads daily logs of previous shift operations to determine the occurrence of conditions requiring special attention during his shift;

Inspects entire plant on assigned shift, records required readings, checks motors, pumps, air compressors, sludge scrapers, electrical panels, chemical feed equipment & storage, and a variety of other gauges, charts and equipment;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic water reclamation method;

Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures;

Knowledge of a variety of hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles pertinent to the operation of a water reclamation facility;

Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of a water reclamation facility;

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES (cont’d)

Knowledge of chemical and bacteriological processes involved in the treatment of wastewater;

Knowledge and ability to make minor operating repairs and adjustments in connection with the equipment;

Knowledge of safety practices used in wastewater field;

Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices utilized in the wastewater treatment fields;

Ability to work around large equipment including pumps and electrical equipment, including the ability to inspect the equipment to detect problem areas and make corrective remedial measures;

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relations with associates and general public;

Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions and diagrams;

Ability to read and interpret gauges and meters used in regulating operations of plant equipment and maintenance;

Ability to maintain records and logs then prepare and submit reports;

Ability to read and understand plant blueprints and diagrams;

Ability to effectively utilize facility safety equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent;

Must possess a valid State of Ohio Driver’s License; 

Any combination of training and experience which will indicate possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed above;

Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam, drug test, criminal background investigation and a driving record check;
